The emergency management community is going through a transformation as they are increasingly called upon to address an increasing series of complex challenges including the “new normal” of the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, pandemics, civil disorders, and other issues. In addition to the response and recovery from these events, emergency managers are also serving as leaders in preparedness planning and pre-disaster mitigation efforts. The webinar will explore the implications of this evolving change on our efforts to improve incident management operations as well as resilience planning and programs. Among the issues we will explore is the relationship between the changing relationship between the federal government and state and local emergency management agencies; the critical role and evolving relationships with the private sector; the importance of technology, including the crucial role of data as a key currency to improve planning and operations; and an exploration of the kind of training and education required for the “new” emergency management leadership. It will feature forward-leaning EM leaders who are acting on it now.

IAEM/Harvard NLPI Think Tank Moderator: Richard Serino

The Honorable Richard Serino is currently a “Distinguished Visiting Fellow” at Harvard University, National Preparedness Leadership Initiative and a Senior Advisor at MIT’s Urban Risk Lab. Mr. Serino was appointed by President Obama and confirmed by the Senate as the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s 8th Deputy Administrator in October 2009 and served until 2014. Prior to his appointment as Deputy Administrator, he served as Chief of Boston EMS and Assistant Director of the Boston Public Health Commission.
