Understanding the Certification Exam

Advance Your Career • Gain Recognition • Make an Impact

A key component in achieving the AEM and CEM credential is the successful completion of a comprehensive examination.

Exam Overview

  • Format: The exam has 120 multiple-choice questions covering universal emergency management principles and region-specific content.
  • Duration: Examinees are allotted 2.5 hours to complete the exam.
  • Scoring: A scaled scoring system is used, with a passing score of 500 on a scale of 200 to 800.

The IAEM Certification Exam is available online. The exam evaluates your knowledge of emergency management principles, policies, and best practices.

Scheduling the Exam

Applicants have the option to complete the exam individually or with a group.

Individual Exam

Proctor Selection – Choose an approved proctor, such as IAEM headquarters staff, faculty at a local high school or community college, training officer at a military installation, or an official testing facility. Another proctor possibility is a former Certification Commissioner who served within the last five years, has a current AEM or CEM designation and is not serving in a role supporting the Certification Commission.

Submit the Exam Request Form with the proctor's contact information and preferred exam date, providing at least 14 business days' notice. A how-to guide for requesting the online exam can be found here.

Group Exam

Coordination – Contact IAEM staff member Albon Yowell at albon@iaem.com to arrange group exam offerings, or see current exam offerings here.

When to Take the Exam

  • You can schedule and take the exam anytime after paying the application fee.
  • The exam is independent of your application review—passing it is just one requirement for certification.

Retest Policy

If an applicant does not pass the exam:

  • First Retake: One additional attempt is allowed at no extra charge after a 60-day waiting period.
  • Subsequent Attempts: After two unsuccessful attempts, an applicant must repay the certification fee to receive two more opportunities.
It's important to note that if an applicant has an approved application in the Certification Portal, they have one year from the time that application was approved to pass the exam. Therefore, timely preparation and scheduling are crucial.
